Description

The Barong dance is a relic of pre-Hindu culture which symbolizes the battle between good (dharma) and evil (adharma).  According to the beliefs of the Balinese people, especially those who are Hindu, good and bad always coexist or are also known as Rwa Bhineda.  The word Barong comes from the word bahruh which means bear.

But according to the opinion that the word Barong comes from ancient Java.  The position of the Barong as a mythical animal, is a depiction or embodiment of a magical animal, a sacred animal, a creation of religious values.

The Barong dance tells about the battle between Barong and Rangda, also equipped with other characters, such as monkeys (Barong’s best friend), Dewi Kunti, Sadewa (Dewi Kunti’s child) and Rangda’s followers.  In this dance, Barong symbolizes goodness where the dancers wear four-legged animal costumes and badness which is symbolized by Rangda, which is a scary figure with two sharp fangs in his mouth.
